Accessible Bathroom Design

It is a problem for a person with disability to use bathroom on their own. They often need assistance from somebody which not only make their movement confined but also hurt their self-respect. Perhaps a bathroom planned keeping in mind the need of a disabled person, will not only make movement around the bathroom easy but will also make them feel more independent.

Last spring our mother met with a bad accident on her way back from the super market. She fractured her hip bone and was admitted in the hospital for many weeks. Once she was discharged we agreed that she should live with us so that she may be looked after. The accident altogeather confined her movement and she needed help for everything. She was diffident asking for help, especially at the time of going to the bathroom. Therefore, we decided to remodel the bathroom adjacted to her room so that it was convenient for her to use it on her own.

In order to invest in a project concerning bathroom renovation it was important for us to know the basic information about it. Secondly, the threshold of the bathroom was made at level with the flooring outside. Sliding doors were put for easy access.

It may be better to do away with the tub and convert the area into a shower enclosure to prevent any fall or accident. Installing a seat under the shower can also be done. There should be arrangement for wall mounted grab bars on each side of the shower enclosure. Be certain to use of anti-slip tiles to reduce the risk of accident.

The space under the basin should be kept empty so as to allow the wheel chair to be adjusted underneath. The height of the toilet should not exceed beyond 16 and a half to 18 inches so that the person can use the toilet without much problems.

Any sort of open wire need special attention in order to make the bathroom safer. This is in particularly important if an old or a disabled person is using the bathroom. Another precautionary measure is to install temperature regulated faucets to prevent scaling of the skin. A bathroom deprived of adequate ventilation is very difficult to use and maintain. Although exhaust fans is the best way to allow good ventilation in the bathroom, they are often very noisy and consume a lot of electricity.
